Pronouns you actually use (I / you / we)
Choose the right ‘you’, and get comfortable with the most common pronoun patterns.
What to know
These are the patterns that matter most at beginner level.
- Du = informal ‘you’. Sie = formal ‘you’ (capital S) and takes 3rd‑person plural verb form.
- German word order changes when you start a sentence with time/place — but the verb stays 2nd in main clauses (V2).
Wie heißt du?
What’s your name? (informal)
Wie heißen Sie?
What’s your name? (formal)
Ich komme aus Deutschland.
I come from Germany.
Ich bin hier.
I am here.
Ich möchte Wasser.
I would like water.
Ich verstehe nicht.
I don't understand.
Sprechen Sie Englisch?
Do you speak English? (formal)
Wo ist die Toilette?
Where is the toilet?
Practice tip
Take one sentence and swap the subject: I → you → we.
- Say it slowly first, then at normal speed.
- If the verb changes, learn the ‘you’ form as a pair.
