Verbs: the present tense you’ll actually use
A practical way to start using verbs without getting stuck in conjugation tables.
What matters most
Start with verbs that let you communicate immediately.
- Main clauses are usually V2: the conjugated verb is the 2nd element.
- Many verbs are separable: aufstehen → Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.
- Modal verbs (können, müssen, wollen…) are super useful.
Heute gehe ich nach Hause.
Today I go home.
Ich stehe um 7 Uhr auf.
I get up at 7 o'clock.
Ich kann Deutsch sprechen.
I can speak German.
Ich bin hier.
I am here.
Ich möchte Wasser.
I would like water.
Ich verstehe nicht.
I don't understand.
Sprechen Sie Englisch?
Do you speak English? (formal)
Wo ist die Toilette?
Where is the toilet?
Das ist mein Freund.
