Pronouns you actually use (I / you / we)

Choose the right ‘you’, and get comfortable with the most common pronoun patterns.

What to know

These are the patterns that matter most at beginner level.

  • Tu (informal) vs vous (formal or plural) changes both pronoun and verb form.
  • Object pronouns often come before the verb: Je le vois. (I see him/it.)
  • On is common in speech for ‘we/people in general’.
Tu es ici.
You are here. (informal)
Vous êtes ici.
You are here. (formal/plural)
On va au café.
We're going to the café. (common spoken French)
Je suis ici.
I am here.
Je veux de l'eau.
I want water.
Je ne comprends pas.
I don't understand.
Est-ce que vous parlez anglais ?
Do you speak English? (formal/plural)
Où sont les toilettes ?
Where are the toilets?

Practice tip

Take one sentence and swap the subject: I → you → we.

  • Say it slowly first, then at normal speed.
  • If the verb changes, learn the ‘you’ form as a pair.
