Pronouns you actually use (I / you / we)

Choose the right ‘you’, and get comfortable with the most common pronoun patterns.

What to know

These are the patterns that matter most at beginner level.

  • Saya (formal/neutral ‘I’), aku (informal ‘I’).
  • Kamu/Anda = you (informal/formal).
  • No grammatical gender and verbs don’t conjugate for tense — time words do a lot.
Saya mau pergi.
I want to go.
Anda bisa bantu?
Can you help? (formal)
Saya di sini.
I am here.
Saya mau air.
I want water.
Saya tidak mengerti.
I don't understand.
Kamu bisa bahasa Inggris?
Do you speak English? (informal)
Di mana kamar mandi?
Where is the bathroom?
Ini teman saya.
This is my friend.

Practice tip

Take one sentence and swap the subject: I → you → we.

  • Say it slowly first, then at normal speed.
  • If the verb changes, learn the ‘you’ form as a pair.
