Politeness & formality (sound respectful fast)

Formality is one of the fastest ways to sound natural in many languages.

What matters most

Politeness levels matter (です/ます forms are a good starting point).

  • When in doubt, choose the more polite form.
  • Memorize one polite question pattern and reuse it everywhere.
私は学生です。
Watashi wa gakusei desu
I am a student.
これは私の本です。
Kore wa watashi no hon desu
This is my book.
英語を話しますか?
Eigo o hanashimasu ka
Do you speak English?

Mini challenge

Say your ‘Do you speak…?’ sentence in the polite form, then in the casual form (if your language has both).
