Pronouns you actually use (I / you / we)

Choose the right ‘you’, and get comfortable with the most common pronoun patterns.

What to know

These are the patterns that matter most at beginner level.

  • Ty = informal ‘you’. Vy = formal or plural ‘you’.
  • Czech has cases; learn common preposition + case chunks (v, do, na, z).
Jak se máš?
How are you? (ty)
Jak se máte?
How are you? (vy)
Jsem tady.
I am here.
Chci vodu.
I want water.
Nerozumím.
I don't understand.
Mluvíte anglicky?
Do you speak English? (formal/plural)
Kde je toaleta?
Where is the toilet?
To je můj kamarád.
This is my friend.

Practice tip

Take one sentence and swap the subject: I → you → we.

  • Say it slowly first, then at normal speed.
  • If the verb changes, learn the ‘you’ form as a pair.
