Pronouns you actually use (I / you / we)

Choose the right ‘you’, and get comfortable with the most common pronoun patterns.

What to know

These are the patterns that matter most at beginner level.

  • Tú (informal) vs usted (formal) changes the verb form.
  • Spanish often drops subject pronouns because the verb ending shows the subject.
  • In many regions: ustedes is plural ‘you’; vosotros is mainly Spain.
¿Cómo estás?
How are you? (tú)
¿Cómo está usted?
How are you? (usted)
Vivo aquí.
I live here. (subject ‘I’ omitted)
Estoy aquí.
I am here.
Quiero agua.
I want water.
No entiendo.
I don't understand.
¿Hablas inglés?
Do you speak English? (informal)
¿Dónde está el baño?
Where is the bathroom?

Practice tip

Take one sentence and swap the subject: I → you → we.

  • Say it slowly first, then at normal speed.
  • If the verb changes, learn the ‘you’ form as a pair.
