Verbs: the present tense you’ll actually use

A practical way to start using verbs without getting stuck in conjugation tables.

What matters most

Start with verbs that let you communicate immediately.

  • Hindi is often SOV: subject + object + verb.
  • हूँ/है/हैं are forms of ‘to be’ (होना).
  • Many verbs agree with gender/number depending on the construction.
मैं हूँ।
main hoon
I am.
यह अच्छा है।
yah achchha hai
This is good.
मैं चाय पीता हूँ।
main chai peeta hoon
I drink tea. (masc. speaker; use पीती for fem.)
मैं यहाँ हूँ।
main yahan hoon
I am here.
मुझे पानी चाहिए।
mujhe paani chahiye
I want/need water.
मैं नहीं समझता।
